Wli Waterfall

Wli Waterfall

Location: Ghana / The Volta Region / Hohoe

Wli Waterfall are the highest falls in Ghana and found in a lush tropical rainforest just over an hour from Ho. To reach them you must hike with or without a guide for around 30 minutes over man made wooden bridges and tangled green paths. You can swim in the natural waters although you may wish to keep an eye on the thousands of bats that surround the cliffs by the falls.

The Wli Waterfalls were a wonderful outing! You arrive at the parking and straight away get a guide to escort you to either the 'lower' or 'upper' falls. We were there during Ghana's rainy season, so access to the 'upper' falls was closed off. Despite the initial dissapointment when we heard this, the 'lower' falls were breath taking enough to make us forget about it all. It all starts with a guided 45min treck across the beautiful rainforest. We stop at several times to take in the beautiful views and learn more about the area and its vegetation. The waterfalls are situated at the end of an open stretch in its natural habitat surrounded by a colony of bats and forest. And it's worth knowing that the waterfalls are the highest in West-Africa (though they are by no means the largest)! The pool around the falls is rather shallow and we were told that it is safe to swim in, though it can be very cold when visiting them in the early morning, like we did, so we only paddled half way. A refreshing, and beautiful experience!
