The Manhyia Palace

Location: Ghana / Ashanti Region / Kumasi

The Manhyia Palace was built by the British in 1925 to receive Asantehene (ruler of the Ashanti people) Prempeh I. It was then used by the Ashanti kings until 1974. It now serves as a museum, containing a range of items relating to the Ashanti Kingdom. The Manhyia Palace has a courtyard and courtroom which is used by the council. These meetings are often held in the open courtyard, allowing the public to watch the democracy.
